Racing is just around the corner; in fact we’re just a little away until we will be sitting on the start line next to all the other Quads watching the red light turn green. The race course is in a beautiful natural setting as opposed to the cookie-cutter style man made courses like Beijing, London, or Munich just to name a few.
As you drive up to the venue you can see the length of the course, since they cut a row of trees down. A large dam props up this lake from a river below, and carves through the rolling grassy hills that are lush and green.
The people here are very nice and personable. Our bus driver, Malcolm, loaned John Winter, LM2X, his bike for Winter’s parents for the week, which was going to cost $100 for the week. I think rowing is a bigger sport here in New Zealand than in the States. There are billboards along the road, and on buses. They even have a commercial on TV, which would never happen back home. Supposedly there will be a remote control helicopter with a video camera mounted on its belly to film the races from a sweet vantage point no other race has offered. I just hope the helicopter doesn’t run out of gas or batteries and come crashing into us.
Our racing can be followed at www.worldrowing.com. The left hand side of the page has a link to results. Our first race is Sunday, where two boats will advance to the final on Friday, and the remaining 6 boats will race in the Reps on Wednesday, where two more boats will join the A Final.
Wish us luck,
