Peter,

Did you cox during high school? If so, where? I am currently a coxswain at a high-school program. I sometimes find it hard to label certain problems as 'small' and others as more pressing, so I end up trying to fix everything. It seems you emphasize offering less comments but more insightful input. What are some big technique areas to focus on (maybe like puddle-spacing) so I don't end up talking too much about all the little things (like 2 seats lunge, for example) and how do I balance the two?

I attended The Basic School with Lampert. I did not know him personally (we may have exchanged a few words in the course of the training) but his reputation preceeded him. Those who did know him had nothing but great things to say. Everyone has his admirers and critics. He had none of the latter so it seemed obvious that Matt was a unique individual. But even in these adverse circumstances I expect that he will continue to inspire other around him, even more so that before.

hello, my name is courtney and i row for North Alleghany, and this is my 3rd year of rowing. I want to be on the U.S.A rowing team but i have a problem, my 2K time is 8:30. I told my coach that i want to be on the U.S.A rowing team but she kind of laughed and said that I need to drop my 2K time a lot, and i tried and tried but I still cant drop my time, where I want it. I'm asking if there is a way i can drop my time to be at 7:00. Is there a way?

Hi, I'm a 6 ft. 2 inch., 160 lb. 15 year old freshman rower whose 2k time is right now at a 7:00.5 but my last one was a 7:02.7. Is this something I should worry about? Also is that considered to be a good if not exceptional 2k time for now? I was the 7 seat of my freshman 8 and did pretty well. I was wondering what I would have to do in years to come to be put on the national. Also, I was wondering if you had any good suggestions to get my 2k down into the lower levels.

Matt was my team commander in Afghanistan, I happened to be on an alternate patrol 500m south of his pos the night he was injured. He is the best officer I have ever worked for. True to his nature, he is at work and is preparing for a possible deployment back to Afghanistan.

Mrs.Cipollone,
I am a high school novice coxswain with nothing planned for the summer, is there any summer camps that you would suggest for me that i could still apply for. And if there is any tips about certain camps that would help me if i go?
thanks again for the advice

Hi Bobby,

Feeling the changes from the seat is such an essential part of learning, so I am not sure there is anything you can read that will get you there. Listen to the coach's call then feel for a change, then experiment: make a call and feel for the effect. If you do not feel an effect, then you need to find a better way to describe the change you are looking for. Above all, keep working on it. If you do not theorize and experiment (in practice, of course), you will have a hard time improving.

And I do suppose that if you wanted to watch something, you could always watch some race video and see if you can pick out what makes some crews go faster than others. As you might expect, I am partial to the 2004 Olympic men's eights final. There is some good footage!

Regards,
Pete
