All I can say is wow. Not only is Andy a great musician, he’s also a really great guy – incredibly talented and incredibly humble.

I’ve always found photographs of women’s rowing quite disappointing, because they rarely do justice to how beautiful and amazing women rowers are. Like I mentioned in the Rowing News photo essay, we rarely get to see our national team athletes as real people, and more importantly, we rarely allow our women’s team to be seen as real women.

This week is dedicated to our women’s team and to the many amazing women that row at all levels. For the next couple days you’ll get to see images from the Rowing News photo shoot, some of the out-takes that didn’t make the final cut, and some behind-the-scenes video from the photo shoot. It usually happens that just when I feel completely confident in my own skills and abilities, something will come along and completely pull me out of my comfort zone.

That’s exactly what happened last week, when Janel Gehring, (lightweight rower, and now Yale coach, Colin Farrell’s older sister) asked me to photograph her newborn daughter, Josephine.

I was thrilled to try my hand at something new. I researched different baby shots, played around with different techniques, debated different backgrounds, and imagined all the different angles I could try. I felt completely prepared.

Last week I showed up at Janel’s house ready to take charge. Of course I forgot one tiny little detail. When you’re working with a 3-month-old baby, there’s only one person in charge, and it’s usually not any of the grown-ups.

I’ve never done a photo-shoot which was completely dictated by somebody else’s eating, sleeping, crying and pooping schedule. But there you have it.

It just goes to show, just when you think you know what you’re doing, and are completely confident in your abilities, (dare I say, even a little overconfident,) there’s nothing like a 3-month-old baby to put you back in your place. And that’s probably a good thing.
