The 158th Boat Race

The 158th Boat Race held this past Saturday was an eventful one. If someone had told me the race would be stopped by a protester swimming into the race, followed by a clash resulting in a broken oar, and end with one of the bowmen collapsing, I would have said that would never happen in a million years. But that’s exactly what did happen this weekend.

At the end of it, the race was overshadowed by the protester who halted what was at that point a very tight race. I can only describe that as truly disappointing. It’s not unusual to see someone run on to a football field. So why was this so different? First, and most obvious, is because it affected the chance for both teams to have a fair race. But secondly, it’s because it runs counter to everything that rowing is about. We go through the sport always trying to constantly improve and give the best we have. We ask ourselves, how can I be better? How can I make the boat go faster? What more can I do for my team? What can I do to help the sport?

But no matter how hard a group of athletes, coaches, volunteers, organizers, and athletes work, it takes just one person to ruin it for everyone. In all my years in the rowing community, never have I met someone who thought, how can I single-handedly ruin it for everyone involved? It goes against the DNA of people in the rowing community. It goes against everything that rowing is about. That’s what makes this sport so special. That’s what makes this weekend’s race so disappointing.

Everything they say is true

Everything they say about Bled is true, and more.

It really is a fairytale town with a deep blue sparkling lake, castles on every corner of the lake, and jagged mountains protecting it.

It’s very surreal too. Bled doesn’t just feel like a fairytale land. It feels like an escape.

These days, I work in a newsroom with 4 TV screens simultaneously showing different news channels – CNN, BBC, SkyNews, etc. So my days are filled with a continuous loop of images of all the ills of the world – a bad economy, violence in Syria and Libya, riots in London, earthquakes and hurricanes in the US, and everything else.

It’s nice to know there is a place in the world away from all these struggles. A place where the biggest problem is a windy day and a poorly-timed rain shower. And while I only get to stay here for a week, I surely will enjoy every moment of it.

Speed Orders Fall 2009: East Coast 6k

This past weekend was the east coast speed order – 6k erg test on Saturday, and racing on the water on Sunday. I had a really good time covering the Saturday erg test, though the fact that I didn’t have to take the actual erg test probably helped with that. All of the video footage was taken with my little Canon point-and-shoot. The song is Start the Commotion by the Wiseguys.
