I get asked that question all the time. My simple answer is usually “Well, that’s how I learned to take photographs.” When I was first inspired to pick up the camera, I was told to photograph the most interesting thing in my life. Being a coxswain, I picked rowing, and it taught me everything I know about taking photographs today.

I went on to photograph my friends at Dartmouth, the homeless in San Francisco, the red light districts of Mumbai, India, Barack Obama on the campaign trail, and BB King in Switzerland. After my long journey around the world, I ended up right back where I started. I’ve been photographing national team rowers since the summer of 2006 and I can’t imagine anything I would rather be photographing.

So the real question is, Why not rowing?
